An electric arc is a discharge of electricity across semi-conducting material, normally a gas. Temperatures at the center of an arc can exceed 5000 degrees F, which is hot enough to ignite most material found in your home.
-How do electrical fires originate?
There are many potential causes for fires in a residence originating from electricity. However, it has been estimated that one-third of all electical fires are caused by arcing. Most common arcing causes are:
* Frayed appliance or extension cords
* Pinched or pierced insulation of building wires and electrical cords
* Cracked insulation on wire and cords due to age, heat, or stresses
* Overheated and overloaded conductors
* Break down of insulation in appliances
-Why the need for Arc Fault Breakers?
Standard circuit breakers protect only from short circuits and overloads. Both of these occurrences are associated with the current exceeding the rating of the wire. In most cases, an arc will not produce or draw enough current to trip a standard breaker, which means the arc will continue arcing until potential damage is done. Each Arc-D-tect breaker includes a microprocessor for arc detection, along with providing the short circuit and overload protection. Which means the instant an arc occurs, the breaker will trip and arcing will decease. Thus, drastically reducing the potential for hazards.
