How to Make a Metal and Wood Lathe
This all-purpose metal and wood working lathe brings on shop versatility!
HERE is a heavy duty custom-built wood and metal-working lathe of large capacity - 12 ½” swing, and 48” between centers - for shop enthusiasts who are tired of being cramped by a small, underpowered lathe. Its construction requires a surprising minimum of tools. Only the threading of the 1” - 8 thread spindle nose will need be done outside even a very modest shop.
This machine is constructed throughout to obtain great rigidity, capacity, and convenience of operation. It is capable of the heaviest cuts with a ¾” gouge or the lightest of finishing cuts. The total cost of the original lath including the countershaft, belts, standard size tool rest and No. 2 Morse taper centers, was under ten dollars. (But before you jump for joy, remember this set of plans was removed from a vintage magazine published years ago, when prices were much lower and they will need to adjusted to reflect today’s prices. The method of construction may be used in building a larger or smaller lathe. Only conventional workshop hand tools are required.
The 6-page plans have been computer enhanced to remove the aging.
