To obtain a UL-1008 listing a transfer switch needs to undergo rigorous testing to insure it's safety. When comparing transfer switches, beware of manufacturers that will try to deceive you with phrases like "designed to UL-1008 standards" or "tested to UL-1008 standards", or "meets UL-1008 standards" in their advertising. This is a clear case of deceptive advertising since they are inferring that their product is UL-1008 listed.
If a transfer switch meets the UL-1008 safety standard, and has been certified by Underwriters Laboratories, it will carry the UL-1008 label. This label will clearly say one of the following:
UL LISTED AUTOMATIC TRANSFER SWITCH FOR EMERGENCY SYSTEMS
UL LISTED AUTOMATIC TRANSFER SWITCH FOR USE IN OPTIONAL STANDBY SYSTEMS
UL LISTED TRANSFER AND BYPASS-ISOLATION SWITCH
UL LISTED NON-AUTOMATIC TRANSFER SWITCH
Be wary of transfer switches that are labeled "UL LISTED MISCELLANEOUS SWITCH" This label does not designate the product as safe for use as a transfer switch, and does not meet the 2002 code requirements.
Municipal electrical inspectors now fully aware of this federal code requirement, and are looking for a UL-1008 label when they come out to inspect your installation.
