Wyoming Bentonite occurs in the Big Horn Basin, the Powder River Basin and along the western edge of the Black Hills in the United States. It's also known as western or sodium type bentonite. This type of bentonite is capable of absorbing 7 to 10 times its own weight in water, and swelling up to 18 times its dry volume. Because of this unique characteristic, Wyoming Bentonite is the standard against which all other bentonite in the world is measured.
Wyoming Bentonite has a wide variety of uses, including:
* For plugs and nozzles in black powder rockets.
* In metal casting as a bonding material in the molding process. Bentonite forms a pliable bond with the sand granules when mixed with foundry molding sands. Its unique bonding characteristics insures the durability of the mold during high temperatures.
* In ceramics to help keep glaze particles in suspension and to make clay bodies more plastic.
* As a natural hydraulic barrier to seal freshwater ponds and lagoons.
* Can also be used in detergents, fungicides, sprays, cleansers, polishes, paper, and other applications where its unique bonding, suspending or gellant properties are required.
May cause eye, skin and respiratory tract irritation.
