HEATHKIT IM-38 AC VTVM Featuring MULLARD TUBES, facelift of Heath IM-21
The use of the classic vaccum tube voltmeter has been universal since the 1950's. The Heathkit VTVM IM-18, successor to the V-6, V-7, V-7A and IM-11, makes accurate measurements of DC+, DC-, AC rms and peak-to- peak voltages plus resistance. The design is simple and rugged, yet timelessly accurate.
However, not many of us are familiar with the AC VTVM. I have personnaly used an IM-38 to measure the output of phono cartridges and the gain of amplifier stages. This is very easily done with the high impedance db and 1 millivolt scales. (full scale)
FOR PRECISION AUDIO MEASUREMENTS, HERE IS THE IM-38 LABORATORY AC VTVM (Formerly the IM-21).
A friend built this particular instrument in the seventies, calibrated it and then stored it away in a dust and moisture free environement.
It features sheilded MULLARD TUBES, one 6AW8 and one 6EJ7/EF184, as seen below. These high quality tubes were used throughout Heath's kit line in the the 1960's. The instrument looks new and performs flawlessly. Nevertheless, capacitors’ ESR were measured, the Mullard/IEC tubes checked perfect and calibration needed touch up. Finally, the cabinet and all knobs were thoroughly cleaned and disinfected.

The Eico 250 AC VTVM was designed in direct competitive response to the popular Heath IM-21, IM-38 and IM-5238. Also the Eico 232 VTVM and 239 TVM were designed in direct competitive response to the popular Heath IM-18, IM-16 and IM-25.
Many kits used by the Electronics schools such as NTS, Bell & Howell, Devry, Canadian Teccart, CREI and CIE were built by Heath.
The eico, cortina, allied knight, scott, bogen, lafayette, EMC and SWTPC kit lines which were competitors have long been discontinued.
