Super Bug (CA-MRSA) Makes National News
The death of an otherwise healthy 17 year-old boy and the subsequent closing of an entire school district in Virginia has brought to the attention of the nation a new strain of Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureas (MRSA). For years MRSA was confined to nursing homes, hospitals and ill or weakened individuals. This is no longer the case, this bug has jumped into the general heathly public.
Two new strains of MRSA known as USA 300 and USA 400 or simply Community Acquired –MRSA have spread from coast to coast with cases reported in Emergency Rooms, day care centers, prisons, schools, locker rooms, fitness centers, and more. These new strains should not be confused with strains generally labeled as MRSA, CA-MRSA is NOT the same as MRSA.
The Bottom line according to disease control experts is that CA-MRSA is making its way through normally healthy people, passing from person to person with the ease of a cold. Center for Disease Control experts estimated in 2006 that more than 2 million otherwise healthy Americans were carrying the bacteria in their noses. According to researchers, the bacteria are being passed not only through direct physical contact is in sporting events, hospitals and jails, but through contact with contaminated surfaces. “We don’t know how long this organism lives,” said Cecilia Johnston, MD, infectious disease instructor at Johns Hopkins, but previous research has shown that the hospital acquired MRSA can live from 3 days to 6 months.
It is important to understand CA-MRSA is affecting our popluation in areas like sporting events, schools, work places, theaters, churchs. It's been found on astroturf, balls, bats, helmits. Are you protecting your sports teams? Are you protecting you child playing sports?
CA-MRSA can be killed with appropriate disinfectants and through proper cleaning procedures.
Canberra’s 891 Arena Disinfectant is the only disinfectant tested and certified using the CDC's testing methods, and approved by the EPA effective against CA-MRSA as of 10/19/2007.
There are other disinfectants out there with MRSA EPA claims, but they are NOT CA-MRSA EPA registered.
