You use a null modem cable(I will include one) and attach the com1 port
to your pc com port. If you are using Windows you can open up a hyperterm session
and set the baud rate for 115,200. (If you are using Linux the use minicom). You set
up communications through your com port and
allow the system to boot.( It allows you to manipulate the on-board flash, images,
loading and executing the kernel). See photo of the boot process. At the login prompt
you enter root and press enter to go into the system and configure more things.You
can interrupt the boot process by pressing
CTRL-C and then configure things like the ip address of the Apache WebServer that
loads. You can compile your own kernel to be loaded
this way using various commands at the command prompt. Knowledge of these
commands is essential for you to effectively use this device.
You can set up netwoking and use this unit as a web server that hosts web
pages and actively interacts with you. You can load and save executable
programs that can run on a schedule. Many other things can be done.
I believe the programmer is used if you have problems booting the device.
The programmer has its own boot code and when you set the jumpers correctly
then it will boot from the flash on the programmer(assuming the programmer is
plugged into the main board(under the metal case).
to interact with a crippled system that you screwed up so you can fix it.(Perhaps
you wrote over some memory where you should not have.
You use C language. There is some proprietary code that runs on boot up.
The Developer manual explains how to boot the system and load the kernel.
To use the included programmer, you will need to get some information from
the user group(site listed below) on how to reprogram the flash(I never tried this).
Most if not all questions you have about this can be answered on the user group at
yahoo. They are very helpful and professional. This unit is a very good way to obtain
proficiency in the use of embedded microcontrollers to provide solutions to
industry or home. If you do not know C language then this is not for you.

My goal was to use this to collect data from a weather station and serve that
information over a wireless link. I ran out of time and my mental horsepower was too
low and I became very frustrated.
